⭐ February 2-6, 2026
As we welcome February, we are feeling hopeful for brighter days, fewer bus cancellations, and more time together at school. More learning, more connection, and more chances to grow—together! 🐊
📚 February is Black History Month
Each year, Black History Month honours the experiences, achievements and enduring
contributions of Black communities in Canada, while deepening our collective understanding of their history and impact on Canadian society. The theme this year is, “30 Years of Black History Month: Honouring Black Brilliance Across Generations — From Nation Builders to Tomorrow’s Visionaries.” This theme celebrates three decades of Black History Month in Canada and recognizes the enduring legacy of Black Canadians, whose leadership, creativity, innovation and resilience have shaped our past, continue to influence our present, and will inspire future generations.
✏️ Our focus at AVPS remains strong foundations in literacy and math, along with our Words Matter campaign. By choosing kind words, listening with empathy, and supporting one another—even when we disagree—we help create a positive, inclusive school for everyone. 💚💛

AVPS 2026 Spring Musical: The Fossils
We are excited to share that AVPS will hosting a spring musical!
A huge shout out to Mme. Scott for bringing this great opportunity to AVPS. The Fossils follow the story of Emily, Jack, and Mary who are spending summer vacation at Grandpa’s house and it doesn’t turn out the way they expected. Their Grandpa invented a Time Machine to fulfill his lifelong dream of playing drums in his favourite band: The Fossils. Unfortunately, the kids receive message that Grandpa is lost somewhere in time! The kids use the spare Time Machine to go and save him. They travel through the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s looking for Grandpa.
We will be holding a meeting next week for students in grades 4-8 who are interested in participating in the musical (on stage and behind the scenes). We will then start holding auditions for students wanting to be on stage. Everyone who wants to participate in the musical will be able to.
We look forward to sharing more details as we approach show time!
Words Matter Campaign
As we've shared, AVPS is participating in the Words Matter Campaign this year. This initiative aims to reduce the incidence and impact of harmful and discriminatory language within our school community.
This whole-school initiative includes activities engaging staff, students, and parents/caregivers.
As we know, it takes a team to make an impact. We are committed to providing students, educators, and families with the resources and support needed to maximize the impact of this work through Words Matter and the LDSB Equity Team.
The Mission
The Words Matter Campaign is dedicated to exploring the nuances of language that can perpetuate harm, bias, and discrimination. Our mission is to foster a more inclusive and respectful communication environment by educating students and communities about the power of words and the importance of mindful language use.
Together, we can continue to create a school community where words uplift and empower, rather than harm.
